Missing teeth can impact your self-esteem and oral health, so it can be discouraging to be told you're not a good candidate for dental implants. Fortunately, the All-on-4 method is an effective solution for patients who have low bone density. Request a consultation at our San Diego, CA, dental office today.
What Is the All-on-4 Method?
Dental implants are titanium posts that can be surgically placed into the jaw to provide a sturdy base for dental restorations. If you have low bone density, you may not be a candidate for traditional implants.
All-on-4 dental implants provide a solution for people who've experienced bone loss in the jaw. This method uses just four dental implants to hold a full arch denture in place.
Carefully Planned Implant Position
Your dentist can determine which areas of your jaw have the highest bone density and place the four implants in those areas. The posterior implants are placed at an angle to maximize your bone density and lead to a more comfortable fit.
The All-on-4 technique offers an alternative solution for many San Diego area patients who do not qualify for standard implants; however, there are a few factors that can affect your candidacy. To qualify for All-on-4 implants:

Significant Tooth Loss
The All-on-4 method is used to treat patients who are missing most or all of their natural teeth. Alternative dental plans may be recommended for those with less extensive tooth loss.

Good Overall Health
To undergo this surgery, candidates must be in good overall and oral health, aside from their missing teeth. Certain conditions like uncontrollable diabetes and periodontal disease will need to be managed before implant surgery. Tooth extraction may be required to remove any unhealthy teeth.

Non-Smoker or Intend to Quit
Smoking increases your risk of complications during surgery and your chances of implant failure. Our dentist recommends that you quit smoking well before your implant procedure.

All-on-4 Can Save Your Oral Health
Prevention of Bone Loss
Your natural tooth roots stimulate your jawbone each time you bite down. When you lose a tooth, those roots are no longer able to aid in that stimulation. Your jawbone begins to atrophy, leading to issues like loose teeth and sunken facial features.
Once implants have been placed, they will fuse with your jawbone over the next three to six months in a process called osseointegration. Osseointegration is key to the success of the All-on-4 procedure.
Your dental implants will mimic the function of natural tooth roots to prevent bone atrophy, promote oral health, and maintain your appearance.
Our experienced dentist can effectively place and restore implants for his San Diego patients. For more complex dental cases that require implants, Dr. Stragier works with trusted surgeons to ensure patients receive the best possible care. Your treatment will involve several steps:
The All-on-4 technique can restore your appearance and your oral health.
All-on-4 Cost
What Is the Price of Treatment?
All-on-4 dental implant costs can vary a little from patient to patient, particularly if extraction or gum disease treatment is required. The best way to learn about the cost of treatment is to get a price quote during a free consultation.
All-on-4 implants are an investment, but patients feel that the amount they pay is justified because the function and aesthetics are similar to natural teeth.
Balboa Dental Care offers financing plans to pay for treatment in installments. In addition, our prices are typically lower than most San Diego area practices, so treatment is reasonably affordable.

Are There Any Risks
After Implant Placement?
Though it's normal to experience mild bleeding, swelling, and soreness following implant surgery, your risk of infection is low when you choose an experienced and skilled dental surgeon like Dr. Stragier. Be sure to follow all post-operative instructions to prevent infection, as this can lead to implant failure or your implants not fusing to the bone.
While the All-on-4 method is less invasive than traditional implant surgery, there are some simple things you can do to make your recovery easier.
Get Some Rest
Dr. Stragier recommends that you take about a week off work following your procedure. You should take this time to rest and avoid any strenuous exercise or physical activity.
Use Medication
Inflammation and discomfort around the surgical site are normal following surgery. Any pain can be managed with over-the-counter medication, and you can apply ice to minimize swelling.
Brush Gently
You should still maintain good oral hygiene while you heal from your procedure. This will help prevent infection and other complications. Be sure to brush gently around the surgical site as instructed.
Eat Soft Foods
Your diet should consist of only soft foods until your dentist says you can reintroduce solids. Hard or crunchy food like nuts, chips, and apples should be avoided until your implants have fully fused to the bone and your gums have healed.
Visit Our Office
You will need to come into our San Diego, CA, office several times following your surgery so Dr. Stragier can ensure you are healing properly and that there are no signs of infection.
Following Dr. Stragier's post-operative instructions will help ensure a fast and successful recovery.
How to Make Your Results Last
With proper aftercare, your dental implants should last a lifetime. However, your custom-made denture will last about 10-15 years. Here's how you can prolong the benefits of All-on-4 treatment.
Good Oral Hygiene
Make sure to brush your full arch denture at least twice a day. Use super floss to clean around the dental implants and under the denture at least once a day.
You can also use a water flossing system to help clean under the full arch prosthesis.
Regular Check-ups
Visit our Clairemont Mesa dentistry office twice a year for routine cleanings and dental exams. We can monitor your oral health and let you know if you require further treatment.
