Root Canal

A tooth infection can be painful, and if left untreated, can lead to other health issues and even tooth extraction.

Root canal therapy at our practice is a virtually painless procedure that can provide relief and eliminate infection.

Our dentist has over 30 years of experience performing comfortable, effective root canal therapy for San Diego, CA, patients.

What Is a Tooth Infection?

A tooth can become infected just like other parts of the body. Teeth consist of enamel, dentin, and soft inner tissue called pulp. The pulp contains blood vessels and dental nerves, which travel down to the roots of your tooth along the root canals. When dental decay goes untreated, bacteria can settle into the pulp of the tooth, requiring treatment from a dentist or endodontist to eliminate.

How Does Root Canal Therapy Work?

Root canals have an unearned reputation as a complicated, painful endodontic procedure. In reality, your root canal can be quick and virtually pain-free.

During a root canal, a dentist or endodontist creates an opening in your tooth to clear out the diseased pulp. They then sanitize the inner chamber to eliminate any remaining trace of bacteria, fill it with an inert substance, and either place a filling or fit the tooth with a protective dental crown that helps restore appearance and function.

Thanks to his extensive experience, Dr. Daniel Stragier can perform almost all root canal procedures in his own dental office in San Diego, CA. However, in rare cases where a dental infection requires more involved endodontic treatment, he can contact a trusted local endodontist for assistance.

Do I Really Need Root Canal Therapy?

Many patients are apprehensive about visiting the dentist for a cleaning, let alone receiving a root canal, but this relatively simple endodontic treatment can save you time and money and prevent much greater discomfort down the line. These are common consequences of leaving a root canal infection unattended.

Further Damage

An untreated root canal infection can seriously impact the health of your surrounding teeth, your gums, and even your jaw tissue. If your tooth has become infected, it is crucial to explore root canal treatment as soon as possible to prevent gum disease, jawbone deterioration, and even the potential spread of the infection to other areas of your body.

Tooth Loss

In cases where the root canal infection has progressed to the point where a tooth cannot be saved even with the help of an endodontist, extraction is the only option. Extraction creates the need for restorative options like bridges and dental implants. Implants are much more costly and invasive than root canal treatment.

What to Expect During Treatment A Step-by-Step Look

Learn what happens during a typical root canal treatment at our San Diego office.

Dr. Stragier will assess the condition of your infected tooth to determine whether a root canal is the right choice for you. Some patients with more advanced decay may require extraction, in which case we can discuss the possibility of a lifelike implant-supported crown.

Effective Numbing

We will administer a powerful local anesthetic to numb the treatment area. Dr. Stragier will never begin a root canal procedure without first ensuring your comfort. We can also provide sedation to help you feel calm and relaxed during your treatment.

Clearing the Infection

Dr. Stragier will create a small opening on the crown of your tooth to access the pulp within. He will work through this opening to clear out all the infected material.

Sanitizing and Filling

Once the infection has been cleared, he will thoroughly sterilize and fill the empty chamber with a natural, rubber-like material.

Temporary Crown

Most patients will receive a dental crown after their root canal to protect the tooth from further infection and damage. Our ultra-strong crowns are made from high-quality materials that blend in flawlessly with the rest of your smile. While your permanent crown is being created, we will provide a lifelike temporary crown.

Fitting Your Permanent Crown

Once it is ready, you will return to our office to receive your permanent dental crown. Dr. Stragier will ensure a precise fit to restore your ability to eat, chew, and speak without pain or difficulty.

The healing process after a root canal tends to be mild, and any discomfort should be treatable with over-the-counter medication. Dr. Stragier will provide detailed instructions on how to best care for your tooth during the recovery period.
